The 2022 film AM I OK? is finally coming to streaming, making its debut on Max on June 6 with a talented group of actors led by Dakota Johnson. AM I OK? was one of two Dakota Johnson movies that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival–she also starred in Cha Cha Real Smooth, which found a streaming home much quicker. AM I OK? received generally positive reviews, with Johnson praised for her relatable performance as the main character Lucy, a woman who comes to realize she’s a lesbian in her 30s.

AM I OK? is based on the real-life coming-out story of screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz, who spent much of her career writing for The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It also marks the feature film directorial debut of comedian-actresses and wives Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allyne. As an LGBTQ+ coming-of-age film, AM I OK? being made by three out LGBTQ+ women helped make the movie more relatable and authentic. With grounded performances from the entire cast, AM I OK? is a great film to check out this Pride Month.

Dakota Johnson As Lucy

Character: Sonoyo Mizuno plays Lucy’s best friend, Jane, who is supportive of her coming out process, but perhaps a bit too pushy. She has a bossy attitude and appears more put-together than Lucy.

Jermaine Fowler As Danny

Actor: Actor, comedian, producer, and writer Jermaine Fowler first got his start as a stand-up comedian, touring the country beginning in 2012. In 2013, he was cast in Guy Code, and in 2014 starred in Friends of the People on TruTV. Fowler’s debut comedy special was Showtime’s Give ’Em Hell, Kid (2015). Fowler is perhaps best known for playing Prince Lavelle in Coming 2 America (2021) and Franco Wicks on the CBS sitcom series Superior Donuts (2017-2018).

Character: Jermaine Fowler plays Jane’s long-time boyfriend Danny in AM I OK? He serves as comedic relief at times.

Kiersey Clemons As Brittany

Actor: Californian actress Kiery Clemons began her career on Disney Channel with roles in Austin & Ally (2013) and the original film Cloud 9 (2014). Clemons also starred in Flatliners (2017), Hearts Beat Loud (2018), Scoob! (2020), and Somebody I Used to Know (2023). Clemons spent 10 years in the DCEU as Iris West, and after a series of scrapped scenes and delayed projects, she finally got to see screen time in The Flash (2023).

Character: Kiersey Clemons plays Lucy’s main love interest and co-worker, Britt. She helps Lucy explore her sexuality.

Molly Gordon As Kat

Tig Notaro As Sheila:AM I OK? co-director Tig Notaro makes a cameo in her film as Sheila, a retreat leader. Notaro is known for her comedy specials, documentary, and television series One Mississippi (2015-2017) and Star Trek: Discovery (2017-).

Sean Hayes As Stu: Hayes is an award-winning actor best known for his role in the sitcom Will & Grace (1998-2006; 2017-2020). He plays Stu, Jane’s odd boss in AM I OK?
