Practical information courses and programmes (2024)

In a course or programme, together with a group of other teachers, you work on certain topics in a number of supervised meetings, with the aim of developing your teaching and/or your qualities as a teacher. During a course, you often work on an issue, assignment or project, which you can implement in your teaching during or after the course.

The registration process for each course is described below.

Target group

To participate, you fit into one of the categories below:

  • Teachers who are not yet (sure) whether they want to involve CEL in their teaching.
  • Teachers who are already sure they want to set up a CEL course, but are not yet sure where to start.
  • Teachers who have to teach a CEL course designed by others and need support and background information.
  • Teachers with (extensive) CEL experience who need deepening and exchange with other experienced CEL teachers.
  • In addition, you should have obtained at least the BKO.
Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Open application. In the academic year 2024-2025, there will be two editions of the CEL course. The first edition will run from November 2024 to March 2025. The second edition will run from February 2025 to June 2025.

Application is open until 1 June 2024. When you apply, you can indicate which edition you are available.

Motivation of participant

While completing the registration form, a number of questions are asked in preparation for the intake interview. In the registration form, we also ask about motivation for participation.

Possible costs/time investment

About 50 hours (30 hours of participation + 20 hours of preparation).

Target group

Participants meet the following requirements:

  • Experienced lecturer with a permanent appointment at UU (or contract of at least two more years).
  • At least obtained the BKO or can be provento be obtained in the foreseeable future.
  • At least one academic year involved as a lecturer in the implementation of a bachelor's or master's honours programme.
  • Involved in the implementation of an honours programme for the duration of the course.
Frequency

Onve every two years.

Motivation of participant

During the intake interview, the participant's motivation is discussed.

Possible costs/time investment

Faculty and participants invest their time (50 hours) in this course.

1st meeting Honours Dean (2 hours), 2nd meeting Honours Dean (2 hours).

Day 1: 24-hour session outside Utrecht
Day 2: Day meeting outside Utrecht
Day 3: Afternoon meeting, in Utrecht followed by Honours Community Day 2024

Target group

To participate, you fit into one of the categories below:

  • Teachers who want to broaden or deepen their experience in developing, implementing and evaluating interdisciplinary courses or learning activities.
  • Teachers and course coordinators who will set up an interdisciplinary course (in part) in the near future.
  • Coordinators who are going to set up an interdisciplinary course, minor or programme.

You must also have obtained at least the BKO.

Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date.

Open application. The candidate does need permission from his/her supervisor to participate.

The application deadline and start date for 2025 are not yet known.

Motivation of participant

A motivation from the participant is expected at registration.

Possible costs/time investment

The costs will be covered by the Executive Board. The participant is expected to invest 70 hours of time. The faculty is expected to facilitate this.

Target group

(Prospective) Directors of Education.

Frequency

The course takes place once a year, provided there are enough candidates.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

All Directors of Education are expected to participate. Nomination in consultation with the vice dean of education. The start date of the course is May 2024 for the term of May-June 2024.

Motivation of participant

The participant does not have to provide a file. An intake interview will take place with the supervisors.

Possible costs/time investment

The costs will be covered by the Executive Board. The participant is expected to invest 40 hours of time. The faculty is expected to facilitate this.

Type of meetings

Two-day meeting: Thursday 23 and Friday 24 May 2024

Further:

Friday 7 June 2024 from 12:00 to 17:00
Friday 21 June 2024 from 12:00 to 18:00

Target group

Academics with a directing role in education.

Frequency

Once every two years.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Nomination by dean. The nomination must be substantiated in some recommendation rules and the dean must ensure that participants are given sufficient opportunities (in time and function) during and after the programme to foster educational development and innovation.

The application deadline is 1 February 2024, the start date is 13-14 June 2024 and the duration is June 2024-September 2025.

Motivation of participant

A motivation is expected from the participant upon registration. The application file consists of:

  • a personal motivation letter addressed to the programme director;
  • a CV with an overview of the educational career results;
  • a first draft of the innovative educational project that the participant will carry out in the course of the programme;
  • a written statement from the participant's supervisor in which he/she assures that arrangements have been made at the workplace to enable the candidate to actually participate in the course.
Possible costs/time investment

The costs will be covered by the Executive Board. The participant is expected to invest 168 hours (0.1fte) of time. The faculty is expected to facilitate this.

Type of meetings
  • Eight meetings (24 hours) at a conference hotel, off campus but easily accessible by public transport;
    • meetings are thematically balanced between pedagogy and leadership;
    • peer coaching;
    • renowned guest lecturers;
    • experienced programme leaders;
  • A joint international study tour (one week);
  • Space for reflection, interaction and the opportunity to explore together the practical implications of the theories taught and the study tour;
  • Feedback while working on an innovative educational project in your own organisation;
  • Strengthening your own qualities as an educational leader in an innovative project;
  • An optional range of training courses: project management, persuasion skills, results-oriented leadership;
  • An in-house book selection of the topics covered;
  • A one-day concluding meeting and a certificate of participation awarded by the Rector.

Target group

Teachers and developers of continuing education from university institutions.

Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Open application. The application deadline is 5 September 2024 and the course starts on 26 September 2024.

Motivation of participant

During the intake interview, the participant's motivation is discussed.

Possible costs/time investment

The entire course costs €1,990.

A reduced rate applies to participants working at one of the four EWUU partners (Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Utrecht University and Utrecht University Medical Centre).

Type of meetings

Kick-off meeting, workshop assignments, peer consultation and closing meeting.

Target group

The Peer Observation Programme is designed for all teachers: from novice to more experienced teachers in all disciplines.

Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Open application. The application deadline and start date are not yet known for 2024-2025.

Motivation of participant

The application form asks a number of questions, no separate cover letter needs to be supplied.

Possible costs/time investment

The costs will be covered by the Executive Board. The participant is expected to invest 16 hours of time. The faculty is expected to facilitate this.

Type of meetings

The programme consists of three meetings and several rounds of observation.

Target group

Academics who have demonstrated educational leadership and have the potential to become a key strategic player when it comes to education policy at Utrecht University and a recognised expert in the field of educational development and contributions to the debate on education policy at national and international level.

Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Nomination by dean. The nomination is always solicited in the autumn and deadline for applying is late November. The start date is June the following year and the term varies from three to five years, depending on the level as determined by the dean.

Motivation of participant

A motivation is expected from the participant upon registration. The application file consists of:

  • a covering letter in which the candidate explains theirmotivation;
  • CV of the candidate, showing that they meetthe admission requirements;
  • Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) and Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO);
  • completed UU programme in Educational Leadership (or equivalent competences);
  • evidence of excellence in teaching and learning, based on past performance;
  • ability to lead the provision and organisation of teaching and the implementation of educational innovation at programme and/or faculty level;
  • a reflection on their teaching performance (including advanced teaching roles), based on evaluations and feedback from students, colleagues, supervisors, etc.;
  • in-depth expertise in their field and understanding of the broader context;
  • experience in (successfully) developing educational innovation at a level beyond that of individual courses;
  • a clear, inspiring and well-founded vision on teaching and educational development with references to relevant literature.
Possible costs/time investment

The time investment is 0.4fte: one day to spend on a project focused on educational leadership and/or policy development and one day for their personal development and contributions to CAT activities focused on teacher development.

Target group

UU employees starting teaching.

Frequency

Four times a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Open registration. To participate, candidates must coordinate with their manager beforehand.

The deadline for registering for Block 1 is 23 August 2024 and for Block 2,3 & 4 it is also already possible to register. The start date is the beginning of each class period and the course then runs for the respective academic year.

Motivation of participant

The participant does not need to provide a motivation letter.

Possible costs/time investment

There is no cost for participation. The time investment represents 16 hours (compulsory) plus optional peer review and teaching observation.

Type of meetings

The course consists of a starting day just before the start of the teaching block, a follow-up day halfway through the block (morning training and in the afternoon optional peer review) and a morning at the end of the block. There will also be a focus on distance learning delivery. There are 16 hours for this course, the training will take place on location and will be offered in Dutch or English, depending on the language preferences in the group.

Target group

Academics in possession of a BKO and SKO, PhD degree and demonstrable interest in discipline-related educational research, preferably through scientific/SoTL results.

Frequency

Once a year.

Nomination or open application, application deadline and start date

Nomination by dean. Interested candidates will be asked for a letter of recommendation by the supervisor for required time investment and expenses.

The nomination is solicited in the autumn and the deadline for applying is in December for the 2024-2025 term. The start date of the course is January 2025.

Motivation of participant

During the intake interview, the participant's motivation is discussed.

Possible costs/time investment

The costs are partly covered by the Executive Board. The participant is expected to invest 168 hours of time. The faculty is expected to facilitate this and contribute €2000 (€4000 in total).

Type of meetings

Participation in 16 meetings on Mondays from 17.00 to 20.00 o'clock. A series of topics will be studied using literature.
