Soulful Streets Exhibitions | Diploma Studio Final Review | 04.29.2024I wanted to share my solo design project from my Diploma Studio. Directed by Professor Ming-Chun Lee. Closing the chapter on my Architectural Education, I was given the opportunity to explore a conceptual research design that tackles developed an urban scale solution using GIS software and mapping analysis software to enhance the infrastructure of the North End S.M.A.R.T. District. This unique Interdisciplinary approach of Architectural and Urban Design focused on developing a low-technological design strategy that promotes placemaking and storytelling. Historic Context:The North End District consists an industrial and residential region. Throughout the 20th century, this area has experienced displacement and urban renewal. Thus, the development of soft and hard urban barriers have morphed and gridlocked these neighborhoods from the adjacent gentrified NODA, Villa Heights, and Optimist Park neighborhoods. This district is home to the North End Black Community, which have fostered an infrastructure of untold stories, narratives, and histories that have discarded and disconnected from the greater Charlotte canon.Design Vision and Inquiry: To achieve the mission of a S.M.A.R.T. city, the desire is to reconnect, reactivate, and revive the North End District. As a connector and entrance to Uptown, the vision for this district involves the improvement of the pedestrian experience and reclamation of the public memory. Thus, the goal of this design intervention is to transform this district into an economic and cultural engine for the city of Charlotte. Design Strategy: This research Design builds off the local citywide initiatives such as the City of Charlotte's Comprehensive 2040 Plan and the Corridors of Opportunity. The intent is to establish a pedestrian experience that allows for residents, visitors, and local grassroot organizations to engage in an immersive walk through the history of the North End District. The goal is to create a collection of urban street pocket exhibition spaces that tie the narratives of this region back into the overall Charlotte historic canon.Design Intent:To recapture the lost history of the North End District, I am proposing a series of exterior pocket exhibition spaces across the site. These involve using informational and low-technological systems that are fabricated from the existing materials and pieces that are already present within the immediate area. The goal is to reuse and repurpose the existing discarded artifacts from the built environment. The new interpretationof these existing element and vernacular will aim to highlight the stories of this district and reinforce its connection to the greater Charlotte area. Following graduation, I am proud to share that I will be continuing with Full-Time employment as a Project Designer at C DESIGN. Shortly after graduating with my Bachelor's degree in May 2022, I intially began as an full-time intern in June 2022 and transitioned to part-time once I returned to Graduate school in May 2023. Commencement Ceremony | UNCC | 05.11.2024 My journey in higher education began when I enrolled in the Early College of Forsyth County Program from August 2014 to May 2018. Between balancing high school and college level courses, I was trained by my instructors with skills that would serve to prepare me for my transition to a four year institution. I graduated with my high school diploma and Associates of Science from Forsyth Technical Community College. Arriving at University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Fall 2018, I began my path to pursuing an education in Architecture. Since then, I have been able to network with many talented Artists, creatives, and professionals. I've made life-long connections and got involved on campus to build my community. In May 2022, I graduated with my Bachelors of Arts in Architecture and took a year off to obtain professional experience as intern. Afterwards, I returned to school in May 2023 and continued working part-time. Now, I am proud to have obtained my Masters of Architecture (Concentration: Advanced Standing) from University of North Carolina at Charlotte's graduate school program. This decade long commitment hasn't been smooth and was filled many obstacles. Between the shift from in-person to online learning formats and various events that have shaped my education on this campus; I'm grateful that I was able to reach the finish line. I want express gratitude to some of my colleagues, friends, instructors, mentors, and family for helping navigate my way to this monumental achievement. As a UNC Charlotte and SoA Alumni, I'm excited to see what the future holds as I take the next step in my career as an emerging Design Professional.
